Maiatza hilabete garrantzitsua izan zen gure proiekturako, laborategiko lanarekin jarraitu baitgenuen, baina inoiz baino gogo handiagoarekin! Lehenengo erreakzioa egitean agertu ziren arazoen ondoren, baita proiektuaren jarraipenari buruz hartu genituen erabakiengatik ere…

Gogoratzen zarete joan den hilean haziak landatu genituela? Bada, denbora bat igaro ondoren, WT arabidopsiak eta PAP1 arabidopsiak hazi egin ziren, eta irradiaziorako prest zeuden. Fitotroi batean sartu, bi ordu eta erdiz, eta bi egunez utzi, atsedenean, emaitzak ikusi ahal izateko. Hori guztia egiten dugu egiaztatzeko ea PAP1 duten landareak erradiazioarekiko erresistenteagoak diren WTak baino. Hori zuzena den jakiteko, Antozianoen eta Karotenoideen protokoloa jarraitzen dugu. Protokolo horren bidez, landare-mota bakoitzeko pigmentu fotobabesleak neurtzen ditugu.

Era berean, WT landareak hartu eta konposatu lurrunkorretara esposatu genituen 15 egunez. Denbora-tarte horren ondoren, begiz ilunagoak (pigmentu gehiago) eta handiagoak zirela ikusi ahal izan genuen. Hori zuzena zela ziurtatzeko, Antozianoen eta Karotenoideen protokoloarekin ere neurtu genituen.

Hilabete honetan amaituko genuen gure biobricka. Lehenengo erreakzioa errepikatu, eta zuzen gertatu zela egiaztatzean, bigarren eta hirugarren erreakzioa egin ahal izan genituen, azkena, kanamizina gehituz. Hori guztia ondo atera zen!

Laborategian lan egitea esperientzia aberasgarrienetako bat izan da, bai ikerketa behar bezala egiteko ikasi eta jarraitu ditugun protokolo eta prozedurengatik, bai izan behar genuen konpromisoagatik. Gainera, guztiontzako ikasketa-aldi gogorrarekin bat zetorren, gure azken azterketekin eta selektibitatearekin bat egiten baitzuen, baina ikusi dugu gauzak aurrera atera daitezkeela ahaleginarekin eta jarrerarekin.

Taldea bere Primary PI-arekin, Sarah G. Hualderekin, lanean.

Zergatik diogu hilabete erabakigarria izan zela? Izan ere, ikusi genuen talde gisa elkartu behar genuela, eta bakoitzaren rolei buruz hitz egiten hasi. Bilera bat izan genuen, eta bakoitzak zer behar zuen eta proiektuaren barruan nola ikusten azaltzeko. Bilera horren ondoren, Karmelek eta Sarahk rolak erabakitzen lagundu ziguten, eta eskaini behar genuen guztia ematera animatu gintuzten.

Proiektuaren izena hartzea beste erabakietako bat izan zen, bakoitzak iradokizun bat, mila aldaketa, bat egitea eta eztabaidaren bat edo beste eman ondoren, bidaia honetan zehar gure izena erabaki genuen: aRADIAMARS (a antikoa RADIA radiazioaregandik eta MARS Martetik hartuz).

Hilabete korapilatsua izan zela dirudi, baina hilabete esanguratsua ere izan zen, Sarahk ezusteko izugarria eman baitzigun: Ume bat izango zuen! Harrigarria izan zen pixka bat: berri garratz eta gozoa aldi berean izan zen, esan nahi baitzuen joan egin beharko zuela eta Sarah-rekin denbora gutxi geratzen zitzaigula, baina, oso pozik geuden umea iristearekin, eta une horretatik aurrera beste hezitzaile bat sartuko zelako proiektuan, azken lehiaketara eramango gaituena: Nahia Eza: Navarra-Biogalaxy lehen taldeko parte-hartzailea izan zen 2018an. Gaur egun, medikuntza ikaslea da eta pertsona sinestezina. Ezin ginen kexatu! Unibertsitateko praktikak proiektuan oinarrituta egingo nituen! Luxu handia.

Horregatik guztiagatik, emozioz eta ikasketaz betetako hilabetea izan zen.

Bidaia honetan gogotsu jarraitzea espero dugu, eta gu bezain ondo pasatzea.

May 2021: A month full of emotions...

May was a very important month for our project as we continued with the laboratory work, but with more enthusiasm than ever! After the problems that arose when making the first reaction, and also due to the crucial decisions we made about the continuation of the project ...

Do you remember that last month we planted seeds? Well, after a while, both the Arabidopsis WT and the Arabidopsis PAP1 grew and were ready for irradiation. We irradiated them in a phytotron for 2 and a half hours and left them for two days to rest and be able to see the results. We do all this to see if the plants with PAP1 are more resistant to radiation than WT. To know if this is correct, we follow the Anthocyanins and Carotenoids protocol, in which we measure the amount of photoprotective pigments of each type of plant. The more pigments, the more protection!

In turn, we took WT plants and exposed them to volatile compounds for 15 days. After this period of time, we could see that visually they were darker (more pigments) and larger. To certify that this was correct, we also submitted them to the Anthocyanin and Carotenoid protocol.

During this month, we finished with the construction of our biobrick. We repeated reaction one and when we verified that it was given correctly, we were able to do both reaction two and reaction three, the last one, in which we added kanamycin. All this with success!

Working in the laboratory has been one of the most enriching experiences we have ever had, both because of the different protocols and procedures that we have learnt for the proper conduct of research, and because of the commitment we should have. It also coincides with a tough student stage for all of us since it coincided with our final exams, but we have seen that with effort and a good attitude, things can move forward.

Why do we say that it was a decisive month? This is because we saw that we needed to get together as a team and start talking about each other's roles within it. We had a meeting where we talked about what each of us needed and how we saw ourselves within the project. After this meeting Karmele and Sarah helped us decide the roles and encouraged us to give everything we had to offer.

Another decision we made was our name for the project, after each one gave a suggestion, a thousand changes, merging them and some other discussions, we decided which name was going to accompany us throughout this trip: aRADIAMARS (a for anti, RADIA radiation and MARS from Mars).

It may seem like it was a bit of a complicated month and it was, but it was also a very significant month as Sarah gave us an incredible surprise: She was going to have a baby! It was a bittersweet surprise: sour because it meant she was going to have to leave and that we were going to stay with Sarah for a short time, but sweet because we were very happy about the baby's arrival and because from that moment on a New instructor would guide us through the project to the final competition: Nahia Eza: participant of the first Navarra-Biogalaxy team in 2018, is today an infallible medical student and incredible person. We could not complain! She was going to continue her university internship guiding us through the project! A luxury.

Therefore, it was a month full of emotions and learning.

We hope that you will follow us on this journey with enthusiasm, and that you enjoy doing it as much as we do.
